Humans are both solitary and sociable creatures who need both privacy and seclusion, both to find ourselves and spend time with ourselves and to also interact with others.
The project at hand is an apartment building with commercial spaces located in a privileged area of the Ensanche district of Bilbao, next to the river and the Iturriza Park and between the Guggenheim Museum and the Palace of
Music. Inside the building and interfacing between the private housing and the public street, there are a number of elements and communal spaces of varying size and functionality, which are either semi-private or semi-public, including arcades, gardens, courtyards and terraces. They are all enshrined and articulated through the various means of connection (stairs, elevators, walkways, etc.).
This enriches the common spatiality that is usually confined to the privacy of the home or the sociability of the street, creating meeting places, places to enjoy, and encouraging collective use and the users’ responsibility towards the housing, both promoting social relationships and expanding the boundary and thus comfort of each home.
The building consists of two spaces containing the homes separated by a central area featuring a space that houses a vertical garden which rises thirty meters above the courtyard, with scenic elevators and bridged walkways that blend successive heights and create gradients of privacy and magnificence before reaching the homes.
