Todo monumento, sin necesidad de salirse de su sitio, está obligado a incidir en el entorno, a crear su propio territorio, su hinterland. Y al igual que toda Ópera necesita su plaza de la Ópera, y todo Palacio sus jardines de Palacio,…. la Nueva Lonja de Ribeira tiene que ubicarse en su sitio, crear su entorno, construir su propia y singular monumentalidad, rodearse de plazas, de vacíos a su alrededor, que le confieran ese halo mágico que envuelve a todo lo singular y que, a la postre, acaba formando parte indisoluble de él.

También tiene que conquistar su territorio, hacerse presente, asomarse al exterior, ganar la orilla y reafirmar su presencia en la Ría, a la que se asoma, en tanto que genera a su socaire ese otro factor imprescindible para la ciudad, quizás el más importante, el más emblemático, el más social, el espacio de todos: el espacio público.

Y con ello construir su propio orden, que no debe ser el de la Ciudad ni tampoco el del Puerto, pero sí uno capaz de servir de nexo entre ambos, complementándolos y enriqueciéndolos a uno y a otro con su presencia, sin perder un ápice de funcionalidad, sino todo lo contrario.

Every momument, by simply existing where it is, inevitably bears on its environment and creates its own territory, its hinterland. Just as every concert hall needs its concert hall plaza, and every palace its royal gardens, the new market building in Ribeira must fit itself into its place, create its own environment, construct its own unique monumentality. Thesurrounding plazas and spaces conferit with a sanctifying halo and, in the end, form an inseparable part of it.

The market must conquer its territory, assert itself, open itself to the shoreline and reaffirm its presence in the Estuary, which it serves. At the same time its shelter provides another function for the city, perhaps the most vital, emblematic and social of all: a public space.

In so doing it creates its own purpose that is neither of the city nor of the port, but a nexus between the two, complementing and enriching both city and port with its presence, without losing a single iota of functionality, but rather enhancing it.
